Playing the double bass means really establishing a couple of key traits: good tone and good rhythm. Sean strives to instill good technique in his students in order to help them produce a warm, clear tone from the instrument while staying relaxed and comfortable. In addition, he improves students sense of rhythm, as the double bass does more than play notes: it acts as the rhythm section for the string orchestra! With these goals in mind, Sean uses the following methods to improve student's bass playing.

- A Progressive Guide to Orchestral Excerpts for Double Bass by Sean Casey

- George Vance's Progressive Repertoire for the Double Bass

- Simandl New Method for Double Bass

- Francesco Petracchi's Simplified Higher Technique for Double Bass

-Francois Rabbath's Nouvelle Technique de Contrabasse

Sean also uses various exercises developed by Max Dimoff and Jeff Bradetich to build hand strength and dexterity outside of these methods.

Students within Sean's studio are expected to learn at least one solo work per school year, as well as audition for Region orchestra. For those who would like to play at a higher level, Sean will push to do TMEA All-State, as well as summer festivals where they can improve on their bass playing beyond the regular school year. Lessons are year round, as summers are an excellent time to make progress.
